Soft, Juicy, Very Fragrant…
Santa Maria pears with an oval-pyriform shape, botanically classified as Pyrus communis, are an early autumn variety belonging to the “Rosaceae” family.
The skin of the fruit is smooth and thin, and there are red-pink rashes on the sun-exposed cheeks. The Santa Maria pear, which has a crisp, juicy and white flesh, contains small and few black-brown seeds.
Native to Italy, Santa Maria pears are actually a species created by fruit grower Alessandro Moretinni at the University of Florence. This strain was created by crossing Coscia and old Williams pears and was introduced to the consumer in 1951.
